From the desk of the Executive Director:
Most months I like to share a bit of wisdom about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a spiritual lesson or just some inspiration. This month I am going to share an update.
I am sure many have questions about the current food situation with reference to FoodShare funding and the effects it will have on our Pantry/Kitchen. What I can tell you is that it is a time of uncertainty. The program at one moment is funded and at the next it is not funded. I can only assume that by the time I finish this letter it could very well change again. I do know that many of our neighbors are frightened about not knowing what will come, they have struggled enough with the limits received on FoodShare in the past.
I do know that we are preparing as much extra food as we can for the possible increase in neighbors needing help these next few months. The first week of November has already shown an increase in numbers and if this rate continues to rise, we could see a need for an extra 6,000lbs of food or more this month alone.
With those in need of additional support for extra funds to feed their families I know that many in our community will be faced with the decision between buying food or paying their rent and utilities. A very difficult decision to make with many cold months ahead, causing an immediate impact with more calls for emergency assistance due to these difficult situations.
I also know though that our community is generous. We have had an increase in financial donations, food donations and people shopping at our store. It all helps tremendously! The creativity and spirit of the community, in the ways we find to help and come together, fills me with faith and hope.
If you are seeking a way to help others or the community, please reach out to me, my email is below. If you are looking to make a financial donation our Holiday Season Campaign is starting, please refer to the information following this letter.
As we pause to give thanks, may we all be reminded that hope grows when we share it and come together as a community. Your kindness and generosity continue to bless others in ways that truly matter. Wishing you and your loved ones a Thanksgiving filled with joy, peace, and gratitude.
